The patio is laid out with you, then graded with a slight slope away from the house so rainwater runs off instead of toward the foundation. The finish is your choice: a plain broom finish, color, exposed aggregate or a stamped pattern that looks like stone, slate or brick.

Measure and plan
The area is measured and checked for slope, drainage, access for the concrete truck and any old concrete that has to come out.

Prep, pour and cure
The ground is excavated, the base compacted and the forms set, then the concrete is poured, finished and jointed. You'll know how long to wait before walking or driving on it.

Concrete Patios: common questions
Stamped concrete or pavers for a patio?
Stamped concrete gives a stone or brick look in one continuous slab, with no joints for weeds to grow through, and usually costs less than pavers. Pavers can be lifted and reset one by one if they settle or crack. Both make a good patio; budget, look and upkeep decide it.
How big should my patio be?
Plan around the furniture: a table for four needs roughly a 10 × 10 ft area, more if you want room to walk around it, a grill and a seating area. Marking the outline on the lawn with a garden hose or spray paint shows you the size before you decide.
Can a hot tub go on my patio?
A filled hot tub is very heavy, so the slab under it has to be thick and well supported. Plan the hot tub pad together with the patio, and check the hot tub maker's requirements for the slab.
